Bucking tradition
Now that Sarah is singing songs that I've sung to her and making up a few of her own, I realize she might be the "odd ball" in Sunday School. A while back, when she was just a baby, I'd sing all the old standbys to her and realized that "Jesus Loves the Little Children" is really racist in some of its wording. I'm not planning on passing on "Red" and "Yellow" as ways to describe a person's skin, so I substituted the line: "Brown and Black and Tan and White, They are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world!" I know that someone could get all up in arms about this and ask,"Why not 'peach' since Caucasians aren't really white?", but I was just concerned with the words that have been used in a more racist context. Anyway, just a thought/FYI for any of you out there who will be teaching Sarah in her Sunday School classes...be prepared...
My own personal gym...
Have you ever been in someone's home and they had a very cool/distinctive style that they used as a theme for their decorating and it involved a LOT of things (be it antiques, items from around the world, plants, etc.) and you thought, "That's great, but how do they dust it all?"
That's what I'm wondering about as I tear out the sod for our new side-yard-flower-bed-project... It'll be great fun to plan and create and learn and nurture yada yada yada, but that'll be a LOT of area to weed... At least I am burning a ton of calories in the process...

Our Next Project...
The rocks lining the bed against the house I've come to name my "trophy case." Since we live on the till left by the glaciers (Hey! 8th grade Earth Science does come in handy after all...) the lovely softball-sized rocks that I've unearthed while blending in compost needed a place recognizing historical honor and the effort it took to get them out of the dirt/clay!
(Plus it's more interesting to look at than the foundation.)
I heard on the radio something that made me smile at the simplicity of it. It was the DJ saying they'd read/heard a leading theologian, when asked if he could summarize what the entire Bible says in one sentence, say,
"Of course! 'Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so....'."
Which is precisely what Sarah just burst out with the other day with no context or lead in from me (of course her version was more like:
"Jesus loves me I know Bible tells so" to her own tune...)
to my delight! Just the beginning of knowing that songs that I sing, things that I say over and over and over are really being stored away to come out later...
How wonderful and humbling at the same time...
